IRP sets fall program CHAMBERSBURG - The Institute for Retired Persons (IRP), which meets during the fall and spring at Wilson College, will begin its eight-week fall program series Sept. 11. Two 75-minute lectures with a 15 minute break between them are scheduled each morning on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., except when a trip is scheduled. Four day trips are planned. On opening day the sessions will feature John Clare, WITF-FM 89.5 Host/Producer, speaking on "Classical Music and Living Composers" at 9 a.m. and the Rev. William Harter, pastor, Falling Spring Presbyterian Church, discussing "The Nations Rage: The World-Wide Challenge of Jihadism" at 10:30 a.m. Other speakers will address a variety of topics in different subject areas, including music, art, current events, science, history, literature history, the future, and the world economy. The series will conclude Nov. 1 with a day-trip to Baltimore. Due to construction at the college, the location for most or all lectures will be in Laird Hall rather than the usual location in recent years. Additional information and mail-in registration forms are available from Al Knoll at 263- 1462, Betty Thompson at 352- 8736 or Frances Ruda at 264- 4779. Area retired residents also may register prior to sessions during the first or second week. The day trips will include: Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty on Sept. 20; Mountain Playhouse (Jennerstown), for a performance of "5/31/89: The Flood," and a stop at Johnstown Flood National Memorial on Sept. 27, and the Nov. 1 Baltimore trip featuring Baltimore Basilica, Mt. Vernon campus of the Maryland Historical Society and Walters Art Museum. Plans for a trip Oct. 18 are incomplete. Registration fee for the eight weeks is $15 per person or $25 per couple. Fees cover mailing and other miscellaneous expenses and a contribution to Wilson College, which allows the IRP to use its facilities. Trips carry additional charges that are assessed at trip sign-up time. |
