Student/parents can explore volunteerism

Greencastle-Antrim High School seniors completed more than 3500 hours of community service during the 2006-2007 school year. In an effort to connect Greencastle-Antrim students with potential service organizations, the Greencastle- Antrim High School Social Studies Department is sponsoring the third annual "Community Service Fair" in the high school cafeteria from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 22.

The purpose of the fair is to give G-AHS students and their parents information about volunteer opportunities available throughout the community. All the organizations at the fair will give students ideas on how they can fulfill the 30 hour community service graduation requirement at G-AHS. The service can be completed any time during a student's high school career, but it must be completed by March of the student's senior year. Seniors who have not yet started their community service hours are encouraged to attend.

More than 24 community organizations have been invited to participate. Representatives from community groups will share information on the types of volunteer experiences they offer and sign-up sheets and community service forms will be available. In addition, Social Studies Department faculty will be available to answer any questions regarding community service.

Any non-profit community organization that has not received an invitation to the fair, should contact Social Studies teacher Ellen Kirkner at G-AHS (717) 597- 2186 or e-mail her at kirkner@greencastle.k12.pa.us
