Summer Concert Series

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - The Hagerstown Municipal Band will complete its 93rd Summer Concert Series Sunday, Aug. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Peter Buys Band Shell in the Hagerstown City Park.

Support group

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - The amyloidosis support group will mee at noon Wednesday, Aug. 15 at Bob Evans, 1721 Dual Highway. The group meets for a luncheon offering empathy, support and fellowship to let others know they are not alone with amyloidosis.

CHAMBERSBURG - Pianist Daniel Lawson will be performing a recital at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21 in Thomson Alumnae Chapel, Wilson College, 1015 Philadelphia Ave.

Summer Arts Express

CHAMBERSBURG - The Council for the Arts has completed its Summer 2007 Series of Arts Express workshops. The program has enabled young people to work directly with professional artists in creating their own work of art including visual arts, crafts, and music. An exhibit of the students' work will be on view at F&M Trust, Memorial Square, from August 24 through August 31. This exhibit is free and open to the public during regular bank hours.

Pieces displayed will be representative of all locations visited by Arts Express, including BOPIC, Sam's Camp, and the Migrant Even Start program. Projects displayed will include scrapbooks, collage, self portraits and baskets.

Families and friends of the artists are encouraged to visit the exhibit.

TGIF

CHAMBERSBURG - The Council for the Arts continues its Summer TGIF series Aug. 17 outdoors at the Courthouse Plaza in downtown Chambersburg.

Vocalist and acoustic guitar player Tom Stendal will perform a variety of musical styles from noon until 1 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, TGIF will be moved to Central Presbyterian Church, 40 Lincoln Way West.

On Aug. 24 Jamie O'Brien will perform Irish music and dance from noon until 1 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, TGIF will be moved to Central Presbyterian Church.

Council for the Arts Summer TGIF Series is sponsored for the month of August by M & T Bank, who has been consistently supportive of TGIF and other programming by Council for the Arts.

Open auditions

CHAMBERSBURG - Chambersburg Community Theatre, Inc. (CCT) will hold open auditions for the Agatha Christie mystery, The Unexpected Guest, from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 26 and from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Capitol Theatre, 159 S. Main St. No previous stage experience or preparation is necessary. Roles are available for three women age 30 and older, and seven men age 20- 60, one of whom must be able to play a young man who is mentally challenged. Perusal copies of the script are available in the CCT Office located in the Capitol Theatre Center, 159 S Main St, 717-263- 3900.

The play, directed by veteran CCT director Tom Amick, will run Oct. 25-28 and Nov. 2-4 at the historic Capitol Theatre in downtown Chambersburg. Ticket prices run $15 for adults under age 60, $12 for age 60+ and $9 for children & students. Opening night only, October 25, all tickets are just $9 (no coupons or discounts). Tickets are on sale now at the Capitol Theatre Box Office, located in the main theatre lobby, or by calling 717- 263-0202. Box Office hours are Monday-Friday 11 am-5:30 pm. Additional Capitol Theatre handling fees will apply to all ticket reservations.

Summer concert series

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - The Hagerstown Community College Alumni Association will hold a Red, White and Blue Summer Concert Series. All concerts are free, open to the public, and will be held in HCC's Alumni Amphitheater.

The schedule is as follows: Sunday, August 19 - U.S. Navy Sea Chanters Choral Group, 3:30 p.m.; Sunday, Sept. 9 - U.S. Army Field Band Soldier's Chorus, 3:30 p.m.

The events are co-sponsored by the HCC Alumni Association, Joint Veteran's Council of Washington County, Club Association of Washington County, 40/8 Voiture Locale 651, VFW Post 1936, and AMVETS Department of Maryland, Inc.

The HCC Alumni Association will sell concessions at the concerts.

group

CHAMBERSBURG - The Summit Bariatric Support Group meets the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Lecture Center at Chambersburg Hospital.

The group is for individuals who have already had weight loss surgery, or are considering surgery as an option. Relevant topics will be presented by a variety of professionals.

Movies under the stars

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - The public is invited to a free outdoor movie event sponsored by Hagerstown Community College's Student Government Association this summer.

Paramount's "Charlotte's Web" will be shown Friday, Aug. 24.

It will be shown in HCC's Alumni Amphitheater and begin at 8:30 p.m. Stadium seating is available, but attendees are welcome to bring a blanket to spread out on the grass.

The Alumni Association will be selling concessions during the movie.

Wellness program

CHAMBERSBURG - Luther Ridge Retirement Community will host a monthly Wellness Program on its campus, on the second Friday of each month at 2 p.m. The topics are general in nature and presented by a nurse from Lutheran Home Care Services. Refreshments will be served.

The program is free of charge and open to anyone in the community. No registration is required.

Old jail and museum open

CHAMBERSBURG - The Old Jail Museum, 175 E. King St., is now open for the season from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. through October with "Stories from the Jail" tours by the Franklin County Historical Society-Kittochtinny.

Diabetes support group

CHAMBERSBURG - The Franklin County Diabetes Support Group has announced its meetings calendar through November 2007. All meetings will begin at 7 p.m.

Sept. 13 - Waynesboro Hospital, Conference Room; Sept. 17 - Summit Health Improvement Center, Conference Room; Topic: Planning a carbohydrate consistent diet.

Nov. 8 - Waynesboro Hospital, Conference Room; Nov. 19 - Summit Health Improvement Center, Conference Room; Topic: Goal setting to make lifestyle changes.

No registration is required for these free events. Any diabetic patient or family members with questions, please call (717) 217-6820. This support group is a service of Summit Health.

Alzheimers support group

SOUTH MOUNTAIN - Alocal alzheimer's support group, "Living in the Moment," meets the last Monday of each month (except December) at Michaux Manor.

The group, offers video presentations, informative speakers and new friends to provide participants with compassion, support and answers to your questions. Attendees may just listen. Homemade refreshments are also served at each meeting.

There is no charge and it is always opened to the public.

Well Spouse support group

The Well Spouse Southern Pa. support group for spouses or partners of ill or disabled persons meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. the second Monday of each month at the Antrim House Restaurant, 104 E. Baltimore St.

The Well Spouse Association is a national organization dedicated to offering emotional support to the wives, husbands and partners of the chronically ill or disabled.
