Community shows true colors

In the aftermath of a devastating fire on Homestead Drive, Greencastle on July 10, the local community showed its true colors.

The response that we had at our food stand for the fire victims was remarkable. In two days, we sold 450 hot dogs, 64 breakfast burritos, 150 cheeseburgers, 23 pies, 15 dozen cookies and numerous cases of sodas and bottled water. When it was all over, we raised $1,400 from food sales. Even more astounding were the donations that poured in. Not only did people pay for food with $50s and $20s and tell us to keep the change, but some also came for the sole purpose of making a donation.

One woman, who had lost her own home to a fire in January, had tears in her eyes as she relived her experience. Another came and handed us a very generous check. There was also a donation given by a department at the Chambersburg Hospital and another from people who attend the Greencastle Senior Center. The comments and generosity we witnessed were very heart-warming.

We would like to thank the following local businesses for their donations or discounts: Sunnyway Foods, Food Lion, Sunnyway Diner, Gibble's/Martin's Potato Rolls, Ron Rosenberry's Meats, Eby's Meats, Greencastle Beverage Center, Johnnie's Restaurant Supply, Wolf's Bakery, and Hardee's of Greencastle. A special thanks is owed to Rick Dickson, our brother-in-law, whose idea and legwork made all of this possible.

Our faith in humanity has been restored by this experience, both by the way in which people pulled together to help and by the spirit of those who were affected by the fire. Our hearts go out to our neighbors as they pick up the pieces and rebuild their lives. May God comfort them and give them strength.
