Tayamentasachta Environmental Center will be a busy place

Six days of activities are planned at the Greencastle- Antrim Tayamentasachta Enivornmental Center During Old Home Week.

From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, Aug. 7 to 10, there will be open house at the center, 500 Leitersburg St. with tours available of the Mansion House and the gardens.

Activities at Tayamentasachta will also include an archaeological dig conducted by the Cumebrland Valley Chapter 27 of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology.

Thursday, Aug. 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. will be Senior Citizen Day, sponsored by the Greencastle Senior Acitivity Center. The day will include hayrides, making ice cream, nature activities, crafts and lunch. Reservations must be made by calling 597-2020.

Saturday, Aug. 11 will be Special Events Day at Tayamentasachta from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will feature local craftspersons demonstations, lunch stand, music and story telling (sponsored by Greencastle Area Arts Council and Old Home Week Committee), enviornmental displays, Volksmarch - 10 km. (sponsored by Cumberland Valley lead Foot Club) and Volksbike - 25 km.

Roy Justice, a time traveling minstrel, will perform throughout the day on Saturday. His performance combines storytelling, music and history.

A Civil War Encampment is scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 11 and 12, at Tayamentasachta. It will consist of Union, Confederate and civilian troops, Antietam medical Hospital, Battery B Maryland Cavalry Battalion CSA, camp life demonstrations and infantry demonstrations.

The public may visit the encampment from dawn to dusk.

Skirmishs will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday in the walnut plantation.
