Cubs win championship

The Cubs defeated the Tigers in a 19-18 slugfest in extra innings to capture the Greencastle-Antrim Little League baseball Minor League Division Championship. The Cubs won the best of three series two games to none.

With the Cubs leading 9 to 7 in the fifth, the Tigers rallied to score five runs to take 12-9 lead only to see the Cubs score three in the bottom of the frame to tie the score again.

Once again the Tigers seemed to take control of the game in the top half of the sixth scoring four runs to take a 16-12 lead, which was erased by the Cubs in their half of the sixth highlighted by Nick Slatoff's two-run round tripper to send the game to extra innings.

Leading off the Tigers half of the sixth was Wyatt Spencer, who hit a towering homerun over the left field fence to bring the Tigers players and fans to their feet.

The Tigers would tack on another run to take an 18 to 16 lead. However, the Cubs were not about quit. Leading off the bottom of the inning was Austin Freeman who walked. Conner Riley pushed Freeman to second with a groundout. That's when the game turned into a frenzy. Gene Byers, who went 4 for 5 for the game, which included two triples, two singles and four runs scored, singled up the middle to score Freeman.

With the tying run on base, next up for the Cubs was Conner Statler who singled to knot the game at 18. With the winning run on base, Matthew Kline came to the plate with the infield drawn in. Kline would not be denied, finding a hole up the middle, scoring Statler for the eventual winning run.

Offensively for the Tigers, Myles Gayman led the way with a double and a triple while scoring three runs.
